Cyclone Remal makes landfall on West Bengal coast: After almost six months, a fresh storm is forming in the Bay of Bengal. This time it’s Cyclone Lemal.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the low-pressure system formed on May 22, developed into a deep low-pressure system by Sunday evening over the West Bengal coast by the morning of May 24, and maintained considerable strength during its passage. It is expected that this will happen.

Current Location and Track 

According to the latest update from IMD, the low pressure system, which was initially spotted over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, has shifted to the northeast. The system is currently located over the west-central  Bay of Bengal and the adjacent southwest Bay, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. It is likely to further strengthen and reach the northeast and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal before making landfall on Sunday (May 26).

Factors driving  development 

To date, predictive models have provided a variety of predictions about the path and intensity of Cyclone Lemal. The global forecasting system, GFS, predicts that the storm could intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) or a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) as it moves northwest towards eastern India.

The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) predicts that a possible inflow of upper-level cold air could cause the system to weaken, remain a low-pressure system, and follow a northerly track towards Bangladesh or northeast India. I am.

The Weather Channel weather team believes that a cyclone may form and make landfall in West Bengal, but  it is unlikely to develop into a severe or very severe cyclonic storm.

Regardless of these forecasts, warm sea surface temperatures of 28-29 °C and low vertical wind shear were observed. These conditions  help maintain the structure of the cyclone, increasing the likelihood that the cyclone will persist and intensify.

IMD issues advisory 

In view of the severe weather situation, IMD has issued a warning to fishermen along the north coast of Odisha and West Bengal, asking them to return to the coast by Thursday. Additionally, people were advised not to enter the southern Bay of Bengal until May 24, the central Bay of Bengal until May 26, and the northern Bay of Bengal from May 24 to the morning of May 27.

Meanwhile, residents are being urged to avoid visiting coastal waters and protect themselves from bad weather.
